WINTER EXHIBITION
Presented by St. George Museum of Art at St. George Museum of Art Saint George, UT
The Heart of St. George: Selections from the Permanent Collection Thirty-five years after the museum’s opening, The Heart of St. George honors the enduring pride and the community’s ongoing commitment to the arts. This exhibition draws from the museum’s permanent collection to highlight the creativity, heritage, and artistic voices that have shaped the region. Works by beloved local artists such as Glen Blakely, Roland Lee, and Barbara Gurwitz appear alongside pieces by celebrated twentieth-century American artists including Minerva Teichert, Maynard Dixon, and Dorothea Lange. Veiled Support by Clinton Whiting Inspired by time spent in Rome observing art and crowds, Utah-based artist Clinton Whiting became fascinated by the ways meaning and existence emerge through human presence and interaction. In Veiled Support, Whiting explores how people hold, shape, and influence one another, sometimes directly and sometimes through brief, passing encounters. The exhibition’s layered, fragmented, and softly blurred figures recall fleeting crowds while suggesting bodies lifting, carrying, and sustaining one another. Through experimental processes, such as ink seeping through layered textiles, Whiting creates literal and metaphorical veils that obscure and reveal in turn. Veiled Support invites viewers to consider how our lives are intertwined, how we support one another in ways both seen and unseen, and how connection often emerges through the delicate layers of shared human experience. Heaven and Earth: Attached by One Pillar by Stephanie Leitch Leitch’s work ranges from large-scale site-specific installation, to detailed hand drawings, to performance. Underlying every work is a compulsion for containing the micro within the macro and a…

Art for All: The Cedar City Art Exhibit, 1940-2008
Presented by Southern Utah Museum of Art at Southern Utah Museum of Art Cedar City, UT
In 1940, a visionary junior high school art teacher, Eugene Jorgensen, proposed the idea to initiate an annual community art exhibition featuring the work of selected local, regional, and national artists. The Cedar City Art Committee was born to coordinate this invitational show, which was hosted yearly until 2008. The Cedar City Art Exhibit is the source of many artworks acquired by Southern Utah University, now held in the collection of Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA); but at least one artwork was selected each year to be purchased for the city, and as the event evolved, students would save money and seek to buy art for their schools. This exhibition highlights some of the most important pieces originating in the annual art exhibit—including nationally-recognized artists like Maynard Dixon, regional favorites like Eve Drewelowe, and notable Utah artists such as Jimmie Jones—from the collections of both SUMA and the Iron County School District. But the Cedar City Art Exhibit not only exemplifies this community’s commitment to the arts and its pride in an artistic heritage—its origins also illuminate an important moment in American history when New Deal-sponsored programs sought to bring art to all Americans. Like four other projects in Utah, the Cedar City Art Committee was initially funded by the Federal Art Project’s Community Art Center Program, which was launched to open the world of art to every citizen. The broad accessibility of art and arts education had a democratizing effect, demonstrating that art is useful and fundamental in…
