Music by Frank Wildhorn
Book and Lyrics by Jack Murphy

Based on the novel by Alexandre Dumas

From the Tony Award-nominated composer of The Scarlet Pimpernel and Jekyll & Hyde comes this swashbuckling musical adventure of vengeance, mercy, and the redemptive power of love.

Falsely accused of colluding with the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte in 19th century France, newlywed seaman Edmond Dantès suddenly finds himself thrown into a Mediterranean island prison without a trial. At the brink of despair after many hopeless years of confinement, his fortunes change when a fellow prisoner helps him escape and bequeaths a substantial fortune on him. Money in hand, Dantès transforms himself into the powerful and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo and embarks upon a quest to avenge those who stole the heart of his beloved bride, Mercedes, and conspired to destroy him. In the process, the man who was once imprisoned discovers the only true path to freedom comes by embracing love, mercy, and forgiveness.

The intersection of science and art begins here. The Juno spacecraft entered into a polar orbit around Jupiter in 2016 carrying JunoCam, a visible light camera. The objective for JunoCam was to give the public a way to be involved in a planetary exploration mission. Members of the public are invited to process JunoCam images. This partnership has resulted in a unique blend of science and art. Enhanced color image processing and artistic interpretations by volunteer citizens, artists and scientists brings out subtle detail in the clouds and storms, including an amazing array of artistry surrounding the planet itself. Contributions by artists yield products suitable for framing and for display. Come and see what helps us all appreciate the beauty of the largest planet in our solar system.

Bio
Dr. Candice Hansen-Koharcheck is a senior scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, and she works on NASA robotic spacecraft missions at Mars and Jupiter. She is a Co-Investigator on the Juno mission and leads the JunoCam team.

Tuesday September 15, 2020 - 07:30 PM

The 1919 Flu Pandemic: Lessons For Today & Tomorrow Voyager Lecture Series With Dr. Ron Smith "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

As the ashes settled after November 11th, 1918, we saw why people called World War One the "war to end all wars"; Thirty million people lost their lives. Toward the end of the war, soldiers begin dying of what was called "The Spanish Flu." Neither Germany, nor the allied forces, wanted to admit how many were dying from this flu pandemic. When the war ended, soldiers returned home and brought the flu with them. In 1918 through 1920, more than one million Americans died from the flu. Worldwide, over 50 million died. The great 1919 flu pandemic took more lives than World War One. Now we contend with the Coronavirus pandemic. Wise people say that if we don't learn from the mistakes of history, we are doomed to repeat them. The 1919 flu pandemic can teach us must about our current situation. We have a moral imperative to learn from our world's last great medical crisis.

Ron Smith’s teaching and lecturing career began at age 9 when his father took him to see a planetarium show at the Griffith Observatory. Ten years later Ron’s dream came true when he began giving planetarium shows at Griffith while pursuing an astronomy degree at the University of Southern California. After graduating from USC, Ron began his 34-year teaching career in the California Community College system. He first directed the Tessmann Planetarium at Santa Ana College, then, two years later, became a professor of astronomy at Santa Monica College. His experience in junior college teaching, public lecturing at the Page Museum of Natural history, and planetarium show production gives him a broad-based science background. In retirement, Ron continues to enjoy sharing his love of science with audiences at Sunriver, Dixie State University, and Center for the Arts at Kayenta.

This lecture will begin at 7:30pm on September 15th. An informal gathering begins at 6:30pm in the Lorberbaum-Stahl Studio. Tickets are $15, including refreshments. Virtual tickets are available for this event.

Master abstract expressionist Mark Rothko has just landed the biggest commission in the history of modern art, a series of murals for New York’s famed Four Seasons Restaurant. In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery. But when Ken gains the confidence to challenge him, Rothko faces the agonizing possibility that his crowning achievement could also become his undoing. Raw and provocative, RED is a searing portrait of an artist’s ambition and vulnerability as he tries to create a definitive work for an extraordinary setting.

Oct 9th to Oct 11th from 11:00AM to 6:00PM
Cost: FREE

Every fall for the past eighteen years, thousands of people have been making their way to “Art in Kayenta,” a three-day art festival in Ivins. There are lots of reasons to attend! For art lovers, it’s being able to wind their way through booth after booth and gallery after gallery of unique original art and wares. For others, it’s relaxing in the beer and wine garden, sipping wine while savoring fresh food from local vendors; others opt for the tasty entrées Xetava Gardens Café serves up. But for many it’s enough just to enjoy the gorgeous weather and stunning red-rock scenery. This year’s “Art in Kayenta” Festival is expected to draw our largest crowd yet.

Art in Kayenta offers one-of-a-kind creations from over 40 juried, regional and national artists who specialize in media ranging from sculpture to painting, jewelry to ceramics, wood to metal, and more. Each year, artists participate in a silent auction featuring their fabulous creations! Festival attendees will have the exclusive opportunity to bid on —and hopefully win—selected art pieces. The auction is hosted by the Kayenta Arts Foundation with proceeds benefiting the beautiful, one-year-old Center for the Arts at Kayenta theater.

Note: This event is subject to safety conditions set forth by the Governor of Utah, Southwest Public Health Department, and recommendations from the CDC. If there is a resurgence of COVID-19 in the fall, it’s possible this event may be cancelled in the interest of public health.

In 1998, Jan Lamprecht published Hollow Planets. A Study of Possible Hollow Worlds. In it he states “Let me show you how my Hollow Planet seismic model can explain the Earth’s seismology better than the existing solid Earth seismic model – and yet not one person at any university has shown the slightest interest in this.”

Rick Miller will present the constant movement of our Earth’s crust and discuss his views on the concept of a hollow planet. Rick Miller is a semi-retired professor of geological sciences (San Diego State University) with primary interests in microscopic fossils and the history of our planet Earth. He moved to St. George in 2001 because of the beauty and geological setting. He has maintained a strong interest in teaching (and was at DSU as an adjunct in 2010-2015) and volunteer lecturing on topics within the geological sciences for the Institute for Continued Learning (2004-present) and the Community Education Program (starting this spring). He also enjoy vigorous exercise, writing, bowling, old Corvettes, Chevy trucks, and caring for animals of all types.

This lecture will begin at 7:30pm on October 14th. An informal gathering begins at 6:30pm in the Lorberbaum-Stahl Studio. Tickets are $15, including refreshments.

Cost: $15

The habitability of Proxima Centauri B, the closest planet outside of our solar system, has not yet been firmly established. The planet experiences stellar wind pressures of more than 2,000 times those experienced by Earth. This would likely blow all atmosphere away, leaving the surface as the only potentially habitable elevation.

However, the planet is orbiting within the habitable zone of Proxima Centauri, the region where, with the correct planetary conditions and atmospheric properties, liquid water may exist. In October 2016, researchers at France's CNRS research institute stated that there is a considerable chance of the planet harboring surface oceans and having a thin atmosphere. However, unless the planet transits in front of its star from the perspective of Earth, it is difficult to test for either.

Even though Proxima Centauri B is in the habitable zone, the planet's habitability has been questioned because of several potentially hazardous physical conditions. The exoplanet is close enough to its host star that it might be tidally locked. In this case, it is expected that any habitable areas would be confined to the border region between the two extreme sides, generally referred to as the terminator line, since it is only here that temperatures might be suitable for liquid water to exist.

Retired scientist Ron Smith will share with us the latest details on our closest exoplanet Proxima Centauri B, continuing the distinguished Voyager Lecture Series.

This lecture will begin at 7:30pm on November 3rd. An informal gathering begins at 6:30pm in the Lorberbaum-Stahl Studio. Tickets are $15, including refreshments.

You can capsulize most pop music acts by reciting how many hits they’ve had and how many millions of albums they’ve sold. But these conventional measurements fall short when you’re assessing the impact of The Beach Boys. This band has birthed a torrent of hit singles and sold albums by the tens of millions. But its greater significance lies in the fact that The Beach Boys’ songs have forever changed the musical landscape, profoundly influencing countless performing artists to follow.

The band is led by Mike Love, who, along with longtime member Bruce Johnston, musical director Scott Totten, Brian Eichenberger, Christian Love, Tim Bonhomme, John Cowsill, Keith Hubacher and Randy Leago, continue the legacy of the iconic group. Grammy-winning songwriter Bruce Johnston joined The Beach Boys in 1965, replacing Glenn Campbell, who filled-in for Brian Wilson, on vocals/bass, when he retired from touring. Highly regarded in his field, Johnston’s vocal work with such legendary artists as Elton John and Pink Floyd firmly established him among rock’s elite artists.

In the two fascinating years that follow, Rothko works feverishly with his young assistant, Ken, in his studio on the Bowery.

A murder mystery, jazz club, and a dance concert all wrapped up into one? St. George Dance Co. returns, more creatively than ever! Murder at the Gatsby is a contemporary dance tribute to the great music and intriguing culture of the Jazz Age with a little murder mystery twist! St. George Dance Company is Southern Utah's only professional contemporary dance troupe. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the world’s longest continuously showing movie, plays in theaters across the world every week with “shadow casts” of actors pantomiming the action and dialogue in front of the screen, with attendees dressed elaborately as characters from the film. There is a ritual of call and response between the audience and the characters on screen, and a host of props that should be taken out or thrown at the appropriate cues.

CFAK is taking the appropriate cue and starting up a Rocky Horror Picture Show chapter of our own! Come in costume and with props as we revel in all that is cheeky and outlandish!
