Jim began his love of the arts being mentored by his high school art teacher, Gerald F Brommer, who encouraged him throughout high school. Professionally, Jim worked for Mr. Brommer photographing different assignments for his many educational art books. After his obligation to the military, Jim went on to teach as an Art Specialist for the DOD in Europe for several years and taught drawing, watercolor, acrylics, ceramics, leatherwork, silversmithing, photography and woodworking. Jim led many art appreciation tours throughout Europe to off duty military and their families. While in Europe he attended several extended educational programs, one of which was a sabbatical in Venice, a hands-on experience learning to paint stroke by stroke the techniques of Botticelli-including using no store bought anything-killing a rabbit to make rabbit skin glue for creating gesso, making our own brushes, mixing egg yolk and damar crystals with pigments we mined in Italy. What an experience! Upon returning to the United States, he taught in the Art Department at Eastern Arizona College. Later Jim decided on a different career path in marketing, merchandizing and finally becoming a Board-Certified Orthotist. Jim left the arts for more than 45 years until retiring his practice in Arizona and moving to Southern Utah where he has settled and built his retirement home with an art studio and has began drawing and painting once again. Jim is an award winning artist with works in 4 different galleries. His work can be seen on his virtual gallery at www.JHewlettArts.com
