From GI to MFA: Clayton Rippey's Explorations in Abstraction
Presented by Southern Utah Museum of Art at Southern Utah Museum of Art Cedar City, UT
In connection with USF’s production Dear Jack, Dear Louise, which tells the letter-writing love story of a military doctor in Oregon and an actress in New York, this exhibition highlights the life and work of Clayton Rippey, who himself was a young GI from Oregon, who served in WWII. Following the war, Rippey graduated with an AB and an MFA from Stanford in 1949, and began teaching at Bakersfield College in California. A prolific artist who worked across media, Rippey’s body of work is a diverse exploration of color, form, and subject matter. This exhibition pairs five of his abstract collage and painted pieces with five of his entirely unique religious works executed using intarsia—a kind of mosaic that utilizes all manner of materials, from glass beads to small seashells, to create a pictorial composition. A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder
Presented by Utah Shakespeare Festival at Randall L. Jones Theatre - Southern Utah University Cedar City, UT
In this hilarious Tony Award-winning musical, when Monty Navarro, a man of humble origins, discovers he is eighth in line to inherit an earldom in the distinguished D’Ysquith family, he realizes his chances of outliving these pesky relatives (all played by one actor!) are slim. So, he hatches a far darker plan of disposing of his unsuspecting relations without being caught in order to claim the title of Ninth Earl of Highhurst. All the while, he is also juggling romance in this uproarious musical comedy. Music and Lyrics by Steven Lutvak Based on the novel Israel Rank by Roy Horniman Directed by Amanda Berg Wilson June 19 - October 3, 2025 Randall L. Jones Theatre Content Advisory: A comedic musical with farcical and darkly humorous elements. The play explores love, class, and includes mild sexual innuendo and double entendres. While presented in a zany comedic and stylized manner, the show involves multiple murders as a central plot point.
