[more+]Explore the interconnection between people, culture, land, and plants of Southern Paiute people in the exhibit Gifts of Tu’veep: Plants of the Southern Paiute. Learn how Southern Paiute traditional and current use of banana yucca, pinyon pine, and coyote willow plants have altered throughout history. Featuring photos, displays, and physical objects such as baskets, tools, and beadwork fashioned by indigenous artisans, the exhibit highlights Nung’wu traditions and how they’ve altered, adapted, survived, or been lost since the introduction of European colonizers. Utilizing materials of the William R. Palmer collection, located in the Special Collections of the Gerald R. Sherratt Library, the Gifts of Tu’veep exhibit emphasizes traditional practices such as basketmaking and harvesting of pine nuts and how these key activities have adapted and survived into the modern era, yet reflect a long, complex, and sometimes painful history. Palmer, a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as an advocate for the Cedar Band of Nung’wu, took great interest in traditional Nung’wu stories and documented legends that may otherwise have been lost, yet altered these to be more marketable for publication to White audiences.
Approaching complex histories and ideas of cultural change through the lens of plant use, Gifts of Tu’veep: Plants of the Southern Paiute heightens awareness of cultural relations, Nung’wu arts, and ethnobotanical knowledge, thereby making history accessible to a wide audience, while highlighting the value, breadth, and persistence of indigenous knowledge and culture.
