Opening July 13, Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA), on the campus of Southern Utah University (SUU), is thrilled to have a long awaited exhibition for the beloved southern Utah landscape artist, Find the Distance: A Jimmie F. Jones Retrospective

The exhibition will showcase works of art that expand the length of Jones’s life. Starting with grade school, his works of art will appear chronologically with pieces from high school, college, his Mexico period (1961-1975) and his landscape period (1976-2009). The artist’s growth from a portrait and figure painter who developed into a landscapist is illustrated to visitors through the arrangement of the pieces.

“Jimmie Jones literally grew up in the national parks of southern Utah and northern Arizona, but not until he started painting them in 1976 did he grow into a deep intimacy with the canyons and the plateaus of his native region,” said Jim Aton, author of the Jones biography, “The Art and Life of Jimmie Jones: Landscape Artist of the Canyon Country.” “His body of work stands as a testament to his profound love for his home landscape.”

This is the second retrospective showing in honor of Jones, the first being in the basement of the Brathwaite building on Southern Utah University’s campus in 1987 at the then Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery. Jones had originally planned for a second retrospective, but after completing a new painting to show how far he had come as an artist, the exhibition transformed into a showcase of his final 15 paintings, considered his best work. Recent Paintings was shown at the Braithwaite Fine Arts Gallery in the fall of 2009, closing just days before his passing.

“This museum is here in Cedar City, for all to enjoy, because of Jimmie Jones and his vision for the visual arts in our community,” said Jessica Kinsey, director/curator of SUMA. “Although the museum has significant holdings of his work in the permanent collection, they are often in collection storage to preserve them for future generations. This retrospective will not only offer works from the museum’s collection but also from private collections around the region.”

Along with Jones’s work, visitors will be able to view an installation of his Rockville, Utah studio desk and two portraits of Jones painted by his artist friends Earl Jones and Richard Hardin. The first portrait was painted towards the beginning of his career depicting Jones when he was younger, whereas the second was closer to his death in 2009.

More information about exhibition and current virtual programs can be found on SUMA’s website www.suu.edu/suma. Admission to visit the museum is free and open to the public thanks to our sponsors; Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Cedar City RAP Tax, Zions Bank and the Sam & Diane Stewart Family Foundation.

The Pirates of Penzance
By W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan
Directed by Cassie Abate

A shipload of sentimental pirates. A bevy of giggling maidens. A band of bumbling policemen. And a British officer given to hyperbole and patter, i.e. “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General.” All these and more bring fun and sparkle to one of the most charmingly silly operettas ever to grace the stage. Frederic, our hero, is governed by duty and forced to abandon his new-found love, Mable, and join the pirate trade. Alas and alack! Must he truly lose Mabel, or can he find a way out of this frivolous conundrum?

Pericles
By William Shakespeare
Directed by Kent Thompson

PERICLES will be performed for only the third time in the Festival’s history. Pursued by an evil king, Pericles sets sail on an odyssey of romance and spectacle. But dangers face him on every seashore as he drifts from country to country, from year to year, from intrigue to intrigue. His loves die. His friends deceive him. The gods are against him. But, in true storybook fashion, those who were lost are miraculously found, strange events reunite loved ones, and mysterious dreams bring family back together again, at last bringing joy and safe harbor to all.

Richard III

Directed by Kate Buckley

King Richard, “that foul bunch-back’d toad,” has manipulated his way to the English throne by exploiting (or murdering) everyone in his path. Yet the ambitious son of York finds his wit and enigmatic charm are not enough to survive in the twisted world he has created. He now must face his own destiny in this haunting tale of the feats—and failures—of kings. Shakespeare’s darkest history is a mesmerizing chronicle of a megalomaniac’s rampage to the throne and remains an irresistible study of villainy in a character to whom we are irresistibly drawn.

Due to COVID 19 and the Governor’s Health Guidelines, some of our events may not happen this year.

***

Rich History
Iron County has rich and inspiring history which is worth celebrating. Fall is a very special time of the year, for it means the harvesting of crops and the trailing of livestock from the high mountain ranges to the desert for winter, which is a yearly tradition. May we never forget the people, animals and resources that built such a great community and legacy.

The Sheep Parade
We are very pleased and proud that once again they will parade down Main Street and be celebrated for all they represent. The first sheep were herded up from town to Cedar Mountain in 1870, and every year since then they have made the trek from the mountain to the valley making their way through Cedar City. Join us for the great celebration!

Tractor Pull & More
Events this year include the Draft Horse show & pull, the “Power Horse” tractor driving demo, vintage car show, heritage crafts and activities, sheep wagon show, Dutch Oven cooking contest, vendors and education booths, Cowboy poetry and music, a dirt dance, a quilt show, art contest, antique tractor show and pull and of course our wonderful Sheep parade.

King Richard, “that foul bunch-back’d toad,” has manipulated his way to the English throne by exploiting (or murdering) everyone in his path. Yet the ambitious son of York finds his wit and enigmatic charm are not enough to survive in the twisted world he has created. He now must face his own destiny in this haunting tale of the feats—and failures—of kings. Shakespeare’s darkest history is a mesmerizing chronicle of a megalomaniac’s rampage to the throne and remains an irresistible study of villainy in a character to whom we are irresistibly drawn.
