Join Bruce Bennett,  President and Artistic director, as he talks about the history of our local theater scene and catch you up on the progress of the new St George Musical Theater.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Bruce Bennett

Bruce Bennett is one of many California transplants and arrived here 27 years ago with his wife Ellen and 3 children. They've lived here far longer than anywhere else and consider this home though they travel to southern California frequently for beach therapy. Bruce worked in corporate sales for Xerox Engineering for over 10 years then moved here to open a Xerox dealership. He found theater in his late 20's performed on many stages here locally and has been heavily involved in St. George Musical Theater for 25 years and is now honored to be the President and Artistic Director. Some of you may remember that Bruce wrote the local film review column in the Spectrum for 15 years - that's over 700 reviews and lots of         popcorn. Under Bruce's  leadership St. George Musical Theater is poised to build a brand new theater to the         downtown area and historians have told him it will be the first brand new, community centered theater built in St. George since the Opera House was constructed in 1875.

Who remembers China cabinets, full of delicate, beautiful plates, cups, saucers, creamer and sugar bowls?  These precious dishes were only taken out and used on very special occasions. Crystal dessert cups, and sterling silver pieces also need tender care. Their importance as well as the history they brought to mind may be disappearing.  Those who kept and treasured these things have seen their importance fade for the younger generations. A couple of women I know, clearing out their parents’ homes, were dismayed that they didn’t know what to do with the China kept by their mothers. Who would take it when they were gone too?

However, there are those who value the history and customs these fine pieces represent. The Daughters of the Utah Pioneers Third Weekend Event for May will feature such a person.

Nancy Carlton, a native of Ogden, has loved fine China and what it represents for most of her life. For her presentation at the McQuarrie Memorial Museum on May 18, at 10:00 a.m. she will share what she has learned about China and pottery. Did you know that different teacups and teapots are used for differing ages? Did you know that the teacup handle styles have names? She will share her knowledge of the history of High Tea, its protocols, the types of tea, those used for medicinal and health improvement, and the common beverages of our pioneer ancestors.

Raise a pinky as you sip (metaphorically) and enjoy a touch of elegant history.

The DUP McQuarrie Memorial Museum is located at 145 N 100 E in St. George. Admission is always free and there is handicap access. For more information call 435 628 7274.

Comedy Church is hosted by Greg Kyte and Adam Broud. Both of them used to be insanely religious people but are now faithless and destined to burn in hell. In the long term, it’s kind of a bummer. But in the short term, it makes for a pretty good comedy show.

Each Comedy Church show features new comedians as well as religious topics. Comedy Church takes an agnostic stance towards faith. Although Adam and Greg are atheists, they’re not the a-hole type. For instance, interviews focus on comedically learning about guests’ experiences rather than trying to find “gotcha” moments regarding religion. To emphasize this, past guests have included people of diverse backgrounds and members of various faiths.

Over the course of a staggering 50 recordings and numerous popular PBS specials spread over a quarter-century, John Tesh has never failed to inspire masses of fans with his always-evolving musical muses. Launching with his Emmy-winning, synth-driven sports music, he conquered the emerging smooth jazz genre in the ’90s with his saxophone series and later became a force in the CCM/Worship world with best-selling recordings that found inventive musical ways to share his deep faith.

On Big Band Live, John highlights the repertoire from his 2012 album “Big Band”. This infectious debut album in the big-band arena was accompanied by a PBS event called “John Tesh Big Band Live!”

Using a 7-piece band that includes a 3-piece horn section, John performs exciting and richly arranged big band standards as a singer and ensemble leader with classic selections that include “The Summer Wind,” “I’ve Got the World on a String,” “Blue Skies,” “In the Mood,” “Sway,” and “Beyond the Sea.” He also incorporates his renowned originals along with personal stories and photos of his life and career path that led him from local radio to hosting Entertainment Tonight, to his musical career with one of the top PBS specials of all time.
